Second Chance Services Unlimited, Inc. (SCSU) provides residential services for individuals who are medically fragile, display some type of maladaptive behavior or have some type of disability. Our services are designed to meet the needs of infants, children and adults who have special medical conditions that require 24-hour observation or treatment.

We provide these services in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Along with the medical services, we help individuals to broaden their horizons and to realize their dreams. We believe that the resident whom we serve should live in the same neighborhood, attend the same schools/day programs and shop in the same stores as other members of the community.

Second Chance Services' mission is to build brighter futures for the medically fragile on a non-profit basis. We help to actualize an individual's potential by promoting their independence, inclusion, individuality, and productivity. Providing positive role modeling, respect and self-control with highly trained staff is paramount to the success of our mission.

SCSU offers its medically supervised program to individuals, families and referring agencies in collaboration with a medical facility. Individuals are referred to us when health care needs are:

beyond the normal care of other individuals in the same age group - requiring a significant amount of individualized care,
- or -
so specialized that special health care plans directed by physicians and/or healthcare provider are necessary.

Examples of individuals who meet the criteria of being identified as medically fragile include:

Infants or adults on an apnea monitor
Infants born prenatally exposed to alcohol or drugs (e.g., infants with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Crack/Cocaine exposure)
Individuals who are admitted directly from a hospital where they have received care for a significant injury or illness
Individuals with special breathing problems requiring significant care or ongoing alteration in the daily routine due to the medical condition
Individuals in Spica Casts (body casts from waist to feet)
Individuals with specialized feeding feeding problems (e.g., feeding tubes, cleft lip and palate)
Individuals with infectious or contagious diseases (e.g., hepatitis, HIV, sexually transmitted diseases)
Individuals with chronic health problems such as diabetes, asthma, or seizure disorders.

SCSU also accepts individuals who require:

special formulas and diets
frequent medical treatments such as dressing changes, intravenous line care
special equipment and monitoring such as dialysis, oxygen, etc.
frequent theapies and medical appointments
in-home nursing services.

The Founder

Mamie Bynum, founder and President of SCSU, Inc. set the example of what one person with a God inspired vision can do to benefit others in need. Since the death of her 10 year old medically fragile brother (Bobby), Mamie was inspired to start group homes for the medically fragile population. Through her walk of obedience and help of her staff, she has been able to make a difference in the lives of many children and adults in need of this type of specialized care.

Mamie Bynum has provided therapeutic foster care services for emotionally challenged children since 1982 and has served the medically fragile population for 6 years. Mamie and her husband Curtis is a "team from heaven" as many have called them. They have adopted 2 medically fragile children who the state had a hard time placing. Those two children are now adults. Mamie has also been an American Red Cross volunteer for 3 years and has provided respite for medically fragile children for the Department of Social Services (DSS), MRDDA, Child and Family Services, and the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) since 1989.

Although born in Summerton, SC, Mamie grew up in Washington, DC and was educated in the District of Columbia Public School System. She graduated from Spingam High School in 1973 then went on to complete her certification in Office Management from Opportunity Industrial Center (OIC). She received her Director for Day Care Center Certification from Prince George’s Community College in Upper Marlboro, MD and has worked as a Director of Day Care for the special needs population from 1989-1994. Mamie is a Certified CPR Instructor and provides Certification and/or Training in CPR, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen Administration (EOA), Automatic External Defibulator (AED), and Blood Borne Pathogens.

Mamie received her nursing degree from the University of DC and is an active member of several organizations including: The Prince George's Chamber of Commerce, The Alzheimer's Association, The Notary Association, The Foster Care Advocacy Committee, and the National League of Nursing.

Mamie has helped to start a number of group homes in the District of Columbia and Prince Georges and Prince Fredrick Counties including: Banks Place Community (Assisted Living), Comfort Zone Elderly Care Facility, Whee Care Community (Assisted Living) and Heavens Gate Assisted Living, Inc. She serves as liaison and trouble shooter for over 15 hundred assisted living homes in Prince Georges and Prince Fredrick Counties. She is also a notary public of the State of Maryland.
